Breaking Free - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The Serpent's Coil
The woman's predatory smile sent a shiver down Elena's spine. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the motel room. "Who are you?" Elena managed, her voice barely a whisper.
The woman chuckled, a low, throaty sound that sent another wave of unease through Elena. "Let's just say I'm a… business associate of Michael's. He asked me to check in on you." Her eyes, dark and sharp, scanned Elena, taking in every detail. "He mentioned you might be… anxious."
Elena's mind raced. Michael had sent her? But why? And why this woman? She didn't trust her. There was something dangerous lurking beneath the woman's polished veneer. "Where is he?" Elena demanded, trying to project an air of confidence she didn't feel.
The woman's smile widened, revealing a flash of something hard and cruel. "He's… indisposed at the moment. But he sends his regards. He also asked me to retrieve something for him. Something you might have."
Elena's breath hitched. She knew what the woman was talking about. The flash drive. The information Michael had entrusted to her. "I don't know what you're talking about," she lied, her voice trembling slightly.
The woman's eyes narrowed. "Don't play games, sweetheart. Michael told me everything. He said you were holding onto something… valuable. Something he needs back."
Elena clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She had to think fast. She couldn't let this woman have the flash drive. It was her only leverage, her only hope of escaping this nightmare. "Michael didn't tell me anything," she insisted, trying to maintain eye contact. "He left. That's all I know."
The woman rose from the bed, her movements fluid and graceful, like a predator stalking its prey. She closed the distance between them, her scent, a cloying mix of expensive perfume and something metallic, filling Elena's nostrils. "You're lying," she whispered, her voice dangerously soft. "And I don't appreciate liars."
Elena backed away, her heart pounding in her chest. She felt trapped, cornered. She glanced around the room, searching for an escape route, but there was none. The woman was blocking the door.
"Let's make this easy," the woman said, her voice regaining its earlier smoothness. "Give me the flash drive, and I'll let you go. No questions asked. You can walk away from all this."
Elena hesitated. Part of her wanted to give in, to hand over the flash drive and run. But she knew that if she did, she would be signing her own death warrant. Michael wouldn't be able to protect her anymore, and these people… these people wouldn't hesitate to silence her.
"I don't have it," Elena said, her voice shaking but firm. "I swear."
The woman's smile vanished, replaced by a look of cold fury. "Fine," she said, her voice dripping with menace. "We'll do this the hard way."
She lunged forward, her hand reaching for Elena. Elena screamed and ducked, narrowly avoiding the woman's grasp. She stumbled backwards, tripping over a suitcase and falling to the floor.
The woman was on her in an instant, her fingers closing around Elena's wrist. Elena cried out in pain, struggling to break free. The woman's grip was like iron.
"Where is it?" the woman hissed, her face inches from Elena's.
Elena gritted her teeth, refusing to answer. She knew she had to fight, to do whatever it took to protect the flash drive. It was her only chance. She kicked out, her foot connecting with the woman's shin.
The woman gasped and stumbled back, momentarily releasing Elena's wrist. Elena scrambled to her feet, her eyes darting around the room, searching for a weapon, anything. Her hand landed on the bedside lamp. She grabbed it, swinging it at the woman.
The lamp crashed against the woman's head, sending her reeling. She staggered backwards, clutching her forehead. Elena didn't wait. She ran. She burst out of the motel room and down the hallway, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she had to get away. She had to escape. The serpent's coil was tightening around her, and she had to break free before it was too late.
